Ghost of Tsushima has been a big hit for Sony, and as part of an interview with Games Industry.biz, boss Jim Ryan has admitted it actually exceeded the organisation’s expectations. Talking about the company’s approach to acquisitions and expansion, he said: “Let's talk about Ghost of Tsushima, which has been a critical delight and certainly a commercial delight to an extent that we didn't think it would be. That speaks volumes to the work that Sucker Punch has done to build on their previous canon of work.”
The game sold 2.4 million copies in three days, making it the fastest selling new intellectual property on the PlayStation 4, beating out the likes of Horizon Zero Dawn and Days Gone. And we know that the Seattle-based studio – previously known for the inFAMOUS franchise – is currently recruiting for what sounds like a sequel. It’s going to be an exciting generation as we move into the PlayStation 5 era, isn’t it?

Well deserved.
I hope they can expand to work on more then one game at a time. Really want an inFAMOUS follow up, or remaster of the first two
Totally deserved. This game washed the meh taste out of my mouth TLoU Part II left me with. It feels like an incredible ode to the work of filmmakers like Akira Kurosawa. It doesn't have the most captivating story out there, but the gameplay and sense of scale is so engagingly riveting that I just wanted to keep playing. Up there with Xenoblade, P5R and FFVII Remake as one of my top games of the year so far.
They are my favorite PS first-party, Naughty Dog is a close second. When the sequel gets announced out it will be my most anticipated exclusive of that generation.
@Stragen8 i feel like they should pass off remasters/remakes of the first game or two to a separate studio, work on this sequel in the meantime, then alongside some members of that studio make a sequel that's more directly linked to the first two games
Well deserved! My teenage mind would have been blown away if I knew that a game like this would eventually exist.
There are basically getting on the same level of Insomniac, Guerrilla, Naughty Dog and Santa Monica.
Also shoutout to Bluepoint.
Hopefully, Housemarque also steps their game up.
10000% well deserved. This game would be worthy of the new $70 price tag if it had come out for the PS5 at launch.
Game of the year 2020 👻 ghost of tshushima.word up son
When I see some comments here.. I always had Sucker Punch on par with other studios.
Alas don’t forget the holy PS2 trinity: Insomniac, Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch (Ratchet, Jak, Sly). For many years, by all of them, we were getting splendid content and just because Sucker Punch took their time with another game hit, it doesn’t mean it wasn’t present with their qualities all time long Kudos!
@SilenceCZ Ironic considering I'm pretty sure they were all third party by then and now they're practically synonymous with Sony's gaming division. Really hope Sly comes back one day
Great game, well put together and deserves all the praise it can get. The only problem i had with it was the open world got a bit boring and repetitive after the first section. And if you collect everything at the begging by the time you get to act two there is not point to do anything as you have all the upgrades you need.
@TheFrenchiestFry Yeah it is. Naughty Dog is first party since 2001, Sucker Punch 2011 and Insomniac is new as we know.
But ND + SP were always PlayStation Exclusives (if we omit their first games). Only Insomniac was always trying something here and there but luckily for us, their main successes were always on PlayStation.
But be aware: Insomniac was quite successful at VR development the last several years. I’m very much eager to find out What’s their VR division cooking for PS5.
TLTR: Give us Jak and Daxter 4!
@SilenceCZ The only non-PlayStation Insomniac game I've played from them is Sunset Overdrive and that was actually a pretty cool game to have as an Xbox exclusive. I grew up on Ratchet & Clank and I'll always be grateful to them for what they did with Spider-Man amidst the sea of titles that try to cash in on a beloved IP or character. I haven't bought into VR in general yet, although Half Life Alyx almost made me, but those studios always seemed like no brainers for acquisitions to begin with.
Now if only Nintendo could pull out the cheque book for MonolithSoft
Really nice. Looks like it all worked out in the end. Perhaps Legends mode and the PS5 upgrade will give the game some legs to keep selling for months to come.
We had a brilliant generation on a PS4. All thanks too all the hard working people with playstation and all the other developers. All you guys are brilliant.
@TheFrenchiestFry I’d love a sly collection done the same as crash and spyro
Definitely deserved. I knew pretty much nothing about the game leading up to release and I loved the game.
Personally it's one of my GotY contenders.
Well deserved🙌🏾, this game took away the bad taste last of us 2 left.
I may be in the minority here but I thoroughly enjoyed The Last of Us part II. With that being said, no other game this year had the impact that Ghost of Tsushima had on me. I poured over 100 hours into this game (and counting as legends is fun) and enjoyed every minute of it.
Love Ghost of Tsushima, look forward to a sequel, but I also want to see Sucker Punch revisit inFamous at some point. GoT 2 is probably the next game but it'd be disheartening if they just leave what was created with the inFamous universe behind.
Imagine the sequel using 3D audio & DualSense immersion!! Sure it’s super early for hyperbole BUT this could be the most hype generation yet..
They totally deserve it. Congrats and I look forward to the sequel. On next gen I think will be mind blowing at least.
Now games like this is what the ps pro was made for .They have used the extra hardware brilliantly .More games with this quality please .
@Boucho11 For sure!
Great to see SP harvest the rewards they deserve for this great game, it's beautifully crafted.
@get2sammyb What are the current/most recent sales numbers for Ghost of Tsushima?
